Pasir Gudang, 3 Julai: Kes pencemaran toksik di Pasir Gudang, Johor kemungkinan besarnya adalah kes histeria secara besar-besaran kerana tiada yang terkesan kecuali murid sekolah perempuan, dakwa Datuk Dr Looi Hoong Wah.
Beliau yang juga merupakan seorang fellow di Akademi Perubatan Malaysia berkata histeria besar-besaran di kalangan murid perempuan adalah perkara biasa dan boleh menjadi lebih sukar dengan hyperventilasi, tangisan, sawan dan bahkan kehilangan kesedaran.
“Fenomena ini lebih biasa di persekitaran yang terkurung dan atmosfera yang menekan yang selalu dihadapi oleh kanak-kanak sekolah. Ia tidak mengancam nyawa, kecuali jika sawan berlaku kerana ia akan menyebabkan saluran pernafasan tersumbat” – Datuk Dr Looi Hoong Wah.
Beliau berkata demikian semalam dalam satu surat yang disiarkan di akhbar NSTP.
Pada perkembangan berlainan, Profesor Kejuruteraan Kimia, Jabatan Kejuruteraan Kimia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Prof Datuk Ir Dr Wan Ramli Wan Daud, berkata kerajaan menerusi Jabatan Alam Sekitar (JAS) dan Jabatan Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan (JKKP) perlu mengeluarkan arahan menghentikan sementara operasi semua kilang dan loji kimia, lapor Berita Harian.
Beliau yang juga bekas Perunding Penilaian Risiko Kuantitatif (QRA) untuk Industri Minyak, Gas dan Petrokimia berkata ia adalah satu-satunya cara untuk menghentikan kejadian insiden keracunan gas daripada berulang.
“Ini adalah satu-satunya cara untuk menghentikan kejadian keracunan gas di Pasir Gudang daripada terus berulang. JAS dan JKKP perlu memeriksa rekod pembuangan bahan kimia di setiap kilang untuk menentukan dalang yang bertanggungjawab terhadap insiden terbabit,” – Prof Datuk Ir Dr Wan Ramli Wan Daud
Gelombang kedua pencemaran udara toksik di Pasir Gudang telah masuk hampir dua minggu dan punca kejadian tersebut masih belum dapat dikenal pasti kerajaan.

I find that mass hysteria can occur in any country and any race and any religion and I find that the effects of this phenomenon can be very distressing and perplexing to even the doctors and nurses who attend to these patients.

As such I am not surprised to that the general public will be very upset and perplexed by this malady.

We must remember that although no organic cause can be found, the distressing symptoms and signs are real and they do cause a lot of pain and suffering to the patients and their relatives.

I HAVE TO KEEP ON EMPHASIZING THAT THESE CHILDREN ARE NOT FAKING THEIR SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS BUT THEY ARE REAL AND ARE JUST AS DISTRESSING AND PAINFUL AS THE REAL ORGANIC SYMPTOMS.

That’s why all these patients must be adequately and correctly treated with sympathy and empathy, best by qualified psychologist and not just ignored.

♥ ♥ Note: The latest outbreak of so-called gas poisoning in June 2019 can be tentatively diagnosed as a possible case of mass hysteria as it satisfies all the medical criteria for the diagnosis.

♥ ♥ The previous outbreak in March 2019 may be a REAL GAS POISONING event as poisonous chemicals and gas were indeed detected at that time.

♥ ♥ Note: Panic attacks occurring within the same time or within a short time in a group of people where there is no organic or physical cause IS A FORM OF MASS HYSTERIA.

For instance if a panic attack occurs in a group of people when a bomb is thrown at them, then it is not a mass hysteria but rather a normal reaction.

But if for no reason panic suddenly erupt among a group of patients, then it is a type of mass hysteria.

Even if there is a precipitating cause like in one of the mass hysteria case seen in the video below where a frog was found in the school and this started a severe panic attack, then it is still a form of mass hysteria because the reaction is grossly inappropriate to the stimulus.
